Cathodic Protection with Linear Anodes (PI-Slit method)
PI-Slit method
Outline
Chloride ions penetrate into concrete due to airborne salts and snow-melting agents, and salt corrosion of steel has become a serious problem. The PI-Slit method is one of the cathodic protection methods using a linear anode system with an external power supply. One or more linear anodes are placed in grooves of about 5 mm in width cut in the concrete surface, and then cement mortar with high fluidity is poured or injected.
Post-Tensioned Prestressed Concrete T-Shaped Girder Bridge
Reinforced Concrete Pier
Feature
- Certain Effect
- Certain anti-corrosion effect can be achieved by appropriately selecting linear anode and installation method according to structure's shape and deterioration condition.
- Reliable Labor Saving
- Labor can be saved by reducing the width of the trench for the linear anode and by repairing the trench by injection or by pour using simple equipment.
- Excellent Durability
- The linear anode is made of high-purity titanium with a mixed oxide noble metal coating, and has excellent durability due to reliable groove filling.
- Excellent economy
- It enables excellent economy by optimizing the installation of linear anodes, simplifying the installation process, and increasing the speed of installation through the use of simple installation equipment.
- Wide applicability
- It can be applied to both prestressed concrete and reinforced concrete structures, new structures and existing structures.
- *PI-Slit Method (Type-S) was developed in collaboration with Central Nippon Expressway Company.
- *Registered on the former NETIS (Registration No. KT-090033-A (Registration period ended))
General Geometry
- *The depth of cutting groove is set-up based on the anode's width.

Titanium Grid Method
Outline
Steel material's corrosion caused by the permeation into concrete of chloride ions from airborn sea salt and the use of snow melting agent can lead to serious damage for concrete structures. Titanium grid-typed cathodic protection - one of the linear-anode-method using external power supply is recognized as a very reliable method due to many achievement up to date.
Titanium anodes are placed horizontally at cutting groves on the concrete surface, then a reduced current is applied to the rebar to suppress corrosion of the rebar. The method is highly applicable to structures with small cover, and can be combined with the PI-Slit method, which is an electro-corrosion protection method that reduces costs by installing anodes in the vertical direction.
Application example of the titanium grid method
Features
- Certain Anti-corrosion Effect
- Certain anti-corrosion effect can be achieved by appropriately set-up titanium grid anode according to the type and the arrangement of Steel material.
- Excellent Reliability
- Long-term cathodic protection effect is confirmed through the achievement of man projects.
- Great Durability
- The titanium grid anode uses a high-purity titanium coated with a mixed precious metal oxide, so it has excellent durability.
- Outstanding Economical Efficiency
- A cheap life cycle cost in comparison with conventional measures against salt damage such as resin coating method and cross-sectional repair method.
- Wide Applicability
- This method can be applied for PC structures, RC structures regardless of new structures or existing structures, and even though for structures with small cover.
